The Sons of Norway graciously provided a grant to bring Colorado resident Katherine Linstrom to our area. Katherine presented a one-woman show depicting the life of Helga Estby, a local homesteader in Canby 1876-1887, complete with costuming and props of the various eras when Helga lived. A book named "Bold Spirit, Helga Estby's Forgotten Walk Across Victorian America" written by Linda Lawrence Hunt, was brought to life on the streets and in the communities of this area. Helga survived the pioneer experiences of blizzards, grasshoppers, prairie fires, tornado, hailstorms, illness and loss of a child while in this area. The family moved west to the Spokane, Washington, area and in 1896, Helga walked across American with her daughter, Clara. Clara and some of the other Estby children went to school district 38 near Canby, and their homestead was on the old Mortenson home site in Hammer township.
The book, "Bold Spirit" is available for purchase at the Canby Depot Information Center. The book tells the entire story of Helga Estby... her life in Norway as a young girl, her immigration to America, her marriage to Ole, her homesteading life near Canby, her move to near Spokane Falls, Washington and her walk across America in an effort to win a $10,000 prize to save her family, farm, and dignity.
